Why this rod fits a small field kit

The Tenkara USA Hane collapses to about 15 inches and opens to 10 feet 10 inches. That packable size is its appeal: it can go in a day pack without making the whole outing about fishing. It has a fixed length, so think about the room you have to cast before choosing a spot.

I like keeping the rest of the setup just as spare. A tenkara rod, line, tippet and a few flies are enough to get started. I often favor simple egg patterns; the chartreuse, orange and red flies in our pin reflect that preference. The rod by itself does not include all of those fishing supplies.

Before your first cast

1. Stand back and watch where quick current meets slower water.
2. Check the space above and behind you for branches.
3. Rig the fixed line and tippet, choose one fly, and start with a deliberate short presentation.
